Working to help irradiate the spread of the Mountain Pine Beetle in Northern Alberta requires many infested trees in remote areas to be burned whole. These are controlled burns completed during the winter time. The fire pictured here was hit by unexpected high winds shortly after being lit - the spruce tree on fire, as well as any other significantly singed trees, were felled the following day to lessen the numbers of danger trees.
